Hatcher Garden Wins First National Conservation Award
On December 4, 2025, Hatcher Garden was proud to receive its first national conservation award from the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) in recognition of our enduring commitment to environmental stewardship, public education and the preservation of precious green space in Spartanburg. The award and accompanying medal were presented to Hatcher Garden Executive Director, Dan Shook, during the the DAR Battle of Cowpens Chapter meeting at the Piedmont Club. Jaylene Morgan, Chapter Regent, bestowed the honor, commending Hatcher Garden for decades of community impact, conservation work and nurturing of a safe, free and restorative natural place for all to visit.
In her remarks, Regent Morgan highlighted the Garden’s emphasis on ecological balance, habitat protection and the unique role Hatcher Garden plays as an urban oasis where people, plants and wildlife can thrive. This national recognition affirms what our community has long known: Hatcher Garden is not just a place to visit - it is a vital environmental resource and a living classroom.
Executive Director Dan Shook accepted the award on behalf of the Garden’s dedicated staff, volunteers, board members and supporters. “This award reflects the heart of Hatcher Garden,” he shared as well as conveying his gratitude to the DAR for recognizing the value of the Garden’s mission.
This national accolade stands as a celebration of everyone who has invested time, talent and resources into nurturing the Garden. From those who plant and maintain our woodland trails to those who support our education programs and conservation initiatives, this achievement belongs to our entire Hatcher garden community.
