Join us for our Garden to Table: Indigo Napkin Workshop and stitch together creativity, nature, and great company! Discover the art of indigo dyeing as you learn simple, garden-inspired techniques to create a beautiful set of hand-dyed reusable cloth napkins—perfect for your own table or as a thoughtful handmade gift.

Best of all, every registration helps support Hatcher Garden's conservation and education programs, allowing us to care for native plants, protect wildlife habitat, and preserve a beautiful green space for our entire community.

Instructed by Indigo artist Raffaella Riva, of Chi Design Indigo, and working with freshly harvested indigo, we will be learning four different techniques on four cotton napkins. You’ll not only take home beautiful, unique pieces created by you, but also gain a deeper appreciation for the art and beauty of natural dyes. Participants will also be shown how to prepare a non-fermented indigo vat.

This intense workshop is $90 per individual and will have a maximum of 12 people for the class. Everything needed for this outside workshop will be provided, but Raffaella recommends participants wear closed shoes, old comfortable clothes and an apron if possible.

A native of Italy, Raffaella came to the United States to work as a fashion designer. She moved to Charleston where she became involved with natural dyes, creating art and craft pieces using plant-based pigments. Eventually she joined Caroline Harper at Chi Design Indigo.

Indigo was a cash crop back when South Carolina was a British colony competing with the West Indies in indigo production. The field of the South Carolina state flag is indigo in remembrance of that crop.
