Educational Program For Children in K4 – Third Grade.

Hatcher Garden and Woodland Preserve is offering educational program in accordance with the South Carolina Science Academic Standards for children in K4 - Third Grade.

A dynamic and professionally written curriculum has been created specifically for Hatcher Garden and Woodland Preserve. This curriculum includes activities and instructional guidelines to be used prior to fieldtrips in the garden, as well as follow up activities to be used in the classroom after the visit to the garden.

In addition, trained education guides will accompany your group as you explore the garden and integrate the many fun activities specifically designed for your age group.

In order to make your school related field trip safer and more structured, please be aware that the following guidelines and safety procedures have been implemented.

  • Schools are required to make a reservation and schedule an education guide at least two (2) weeks prior to the arrival date.

  •    School groups will no longer be permitted to tour
the garden without a reservation and a scheduled
       education guide.

  • There will be a $3.00 fee per student (minimum of 18 students). There will be no charge for adult chaperones or teachers.

  • The curriculum will be mailed / emailed to the teacher when the reservation is confirmed.

  • A non-refundable $25 deposit will be required to reserve a date and education guide; in the event of inclement weather, please contact the Hatcher Garden office to reschedule your visit.

What are the South Carolina Science Academic Standards?

Beginning in 2004, the term for the state-approved expectations for student learning and academic performance in South Carolina was changed from curriculum standards to academic standards. This document does not provide a curriculum, a sequence for instruction, nor dictate instructional strategies, approaches and practices but provides a series of expectations for children's learning at different grade levels. For example, children at K-4 are expected to demonstrate an understanding of seasonal weather changes and how it affects plants. To read more about this document, click here.

It is our sincere desire that students will not only learn from Hatcher Garden, but also learn to appreciate the beauty of nature and all that it has to offer!

To schedule your reservation, please e-mail or call the Hatcher Garden office, 864-574-7724.

We look forward to partnering with you as we continue to develop and expand the learning opportunities at Hatcher.
